Why use a tumbler?

  • Tumblers aren't for everyone, but some people love them! They are great for large amounts or waste in small spaces, such as in courtyards or small yards.
  • They are best placed on a porous surface (such as mulch or grass) as the may drip leachate onto paving or concrete.
  • Tumblers need to be turned regularly. Each time you add a bucket of food, turn the chamber to aerate and mix the contents.
  • They can be placed in sun or shade.
  • If the contents are breaking down slowly, increase your 'green' or 'wet' ingredients.
  • If the contents are smelly, mushy and full of vinegar flies, increase your 'brown' or 'dry' ingredients, and give it a good few rotations of the barrel.
