Do I have to buy a worm farm? Can I just make one?
Yes of course you can make one. It's much better for the environment to make something from rubbish destined for landfill than to buy something new! Think about keeping worms protected from the elements and allowing for drainage. |

Can I put dog poo in a worm farm?
Whilst the short answer is 'yes', there are some precautions:
- Dog poo can contain parasites. It's a good idea to keep a separate worm farm for dog poo, and not use the contents on your veggies or fruit trees
- When dogs are wormed, the wormer can kill your compost worms. Read the packet on the wormer, looking for the 'withholding period'. If not listed, wait a week or so after worming, and do a test sample in an icecream container with just a handful of worms. If the worms die, it is too soon.
Why can't I put meat in a worm farm?
Whilst technically, worms will eat meat once it starts breaking down, the problem is that you'll have issues with smell, maggots, rats and mice, before the worms even consider it.
Unless you have the confidence and experience to deal with these issues, feed meat scraps to the chooks or dogs, or get a bokashi bin.
