Apartments and Units - Communal Composting in Merri-bek

If you live in an apartment, flat, unit or other communal residential property within Merri-bek, and there is documented interest from your body corporate and other residents of the property, you can apply for Merri-bek Council's communal composting rebate.

The communal rebate does not prevent individual households within the same complex from also utilising a council rebate for a personal compost system.

Rebates and terms for shared/communal systems:
  • Unlike individual household systems with an annual rebate available, communal systems attract a one-off rebate.
  • Orders must specify that they are for a communal system, and the form on this page (below) must also be submitted as a pre-requisite for Council to approve the discount.
  • A $50 to $100 compost rebate can be claimed on compost systems in Merri bek annually per apartment block or unit complex (for communal/shared) systems.
  • The rebate value is based on compost system value:
                 * A single $50 discount off a compost system valued between $75 - $125, or
                 * A single $100 discount off a system over $125.
  • Most systems featured below include shipping. For apartments and unit complexes ordering a bulky 'special order' communal system, Council will subsidise additional shipping cost (bulkier systems such as the 400L gedye bin can cost up to $100 in freight).  The additional shipping support is limited to one freight subsidy per apartment block or unit complex. This additional support is not available to individual households, who shall be responsible for additional shipping costs.
  • The maximum council contribution for a communal system for an apartment or unit complex is up to $100 compost system rebate and up to $100 freight (max $200 per apartment complex or unit block).

Each property will be assessed on a case by case basis, and will need the following to qualify:
  • Complete and submit the EOI form below
  • Commitment to completing a baseline data survey and a six-month follow up survey
  • Commit to showing on the Compost Community Map
  • Evidence of support from your body corporate and evidence of commitment from multiple households within the property
